Life Around the Village Roundabout

Emory Village is a small, historic commercial center on the edge of the Emory campus, where N Decatur Rd meets Oxford Rd outside the university's main entrance. It sits in DeKalb County within the wider Druid Hills community, with part of it inside Atlanta and part in unincorporated Druid Hills. The Clifton Community Partnership describes its shops, restaurants and services as a walkable draw for the neighborhood and the university.

A DeKalb County project replaced the old multi-way intersection with a roundabout. N Decatur Rd through the village now carries one through lane each way, center turn lanes, bike lanes and better sidewalks. Close by, Lullwater Preserve gives Emory a stretch of green space that links to the South Peachtree Creek Trail.

Residents on the Emory Village side streets mix with the campus community every day. Many of the people who live and work around the village keep academic hours, which rarely look like a standard workday. Lab time, clinical rotations, teaching and late study sessions all compete with the calendar. A routine cleaning is usually the first thing to get bumped.

Campus Schedules and Keeping Teeth on Track

Missing one cleaning is easy, and missing three is common during a demanding program. Our hours give the Emory Village crowd a few ways back in. Wednesday opens at 7:30 AM, before most labs and lectures begin, and Tuesday runs until 7 PM for the end of a long day.

Wisdom teeth are a frequent issue for patients in their twenties. Third molars squeezed for space may collect food, inflame the gum flap over them or press against the second molars. Dr. Elkasrawy checks their position on digital x-rays and explains whether removal makes sense now, later or not at all.

Adults who never had orthodontics, or whose teeth drifted after braces, often ask about straightening. Our page on clear aligners for adults covers how these discreet trays fit into a professional life. They come out for meals and presentations, then go right back in.

Nerves are normal before any extraction. Topical numbing precedes every injection, anesthetic goes in slowly, and you agree on a hand signal to pause. For people with severe anxiety or a strong gag reflex, conscious sedation keeps you awake and responsive but deeply relaxed, with monitoring throughout.

Coverage can be patchy for students, postdocs and contract staff. For anyone without dental insurance, the in-house CCS plan spreads routine care into a predictable monthly cost. Those who need bigger work can use Cherry financing to keep payments manageable.

Emory Village is also close enough for a real emergency. A cracked molar during a conference week or swelling that flares overnight can be seen quickly, because urgent cases get same-day priority whenever possible. Patients from Emory Village who are new to the practice can use our $59 emergency exam, a limited exam plus x-ray reserved for new patients only.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Elk Dental Decatur from Emory Village, and how do I get there?

The village roundabout is about 2.8 miles from our office, roughly 6 minutes by car. Head east on N Decatur Rd, stay on it nearly the whole way, then turn onto Church St. Anyone wanting a dentist near Emory Village can make the trip with almost no turns at all.

Do my wisdom teeth have to come out?

Not always. A third molar that erupts fully, lines up with its neighbors and stays easy to brush can often be left alone. Teeth that are impacted, partly erupted or pushing on neighbors are more likely to cause trouble. Dr. Elkasrawy reviews x-rays with you and recommends removal only when the evidence supports it.

Is the CCS membership a good fit for graduate students?

For many students without dental coverage, yes. For $44 per month, members receive a pair of cleanings and checkups each year, yearly x-rays and an emergency exam too, with neither deductibles nor a waiting period. Members also get 15% off restorative care, excluding implant and orthodontic services. It cannot be combined with insurance.

Is biking from the village a realistic option?

Yes. The practice lists Emory Village as within biking distance, and N Decatur Rd through the village has bike lanes. The office provides a secure bike rack, so your bike stays safe during the appointment. The full trip is about 2.8 miles, mostly on that one road.

What is the earliest appointment available during the week?

Wednesday has our earliest start, at 7:30 AM, and runs until 3:30 PM. That first slot lets you finish a cleaning and still reach a morning lab or meeting. Friday opens at 8:30 AM, and Monday and Thursday open at 9 AM.
